Giving Thanks – part 2

By In Life

What a great time of the year it is! Christmas trees, lights and decorations everywhere you look, festive music in the background and presents under the tree. It is also the best time to share that festive cheer with others and we know of a very special house for girls in Pretoria where you can do just that.

Peas in a Pod is located in the heart of Pretoria and accommodate girls with a history of sexual abuse. They give them a second chance in life, put them through school and develop their talents. The girls are loved and helped in the hope of giving them the best platform possible to build their future. Since 2010 they have provided a safe place for more than 50 girls.

There are 13 girls at the moment ranging from 5 to 14 years of age and they are like one big family which is really great to see. They share rooms and work together to make the house the best version of a home. They are dependent on donations whether it’s monetary, products, unwanted goods or your time.

One of the most exciting times of the week at the house is when the Moolah box gets opened. Each week the girls receives “moolah” for good behaviour and tasks completed like making their beds or helping with dinner. At the end of the week they can exchange their moolah for something out of the moolah box. Inside you can expect anything from bubbles to nail polish. We loved this idea.

What are their needs?

Currently they have a big need for people coming over to read to them, especially in Afrikaans. If you are wondering what to do on a Saturday morning or perhaps 30min after church on Sunday please contact one of the house mothers and arrange with them, they will gladly welcome you.

In terms of donations they require canned fish and long life milk as well as a fence/wall being built to replace wobbly and dangerous concrete panels (We’re going to try and take on the fence project). Their 12 year old bus is in need of constant servicing and thus costs a lot of money monthly – assistance with service costs or a sponsor for a new bus (obviously huge, but you never know) would be of great help.

Please contact Dr Annali Swanepoel on 082 789 2570 or email [email protected] if you can find it in your heart to help in any way or if you just want to be subscribed to their newsletter for now.

The girls have been through so much in their short lives and Peas in a Pod really provide a supportive and loving home to them. You can make a difference, it might be small to you, but it’s enormous to them.
